Pradaxa Bleeding Side Effects
Pradaxa is a blood thinner that was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010 to lessen the risk of strokes in people with atrial fibrillation. However, in September 2012, an article published in The Journal for The American Medical Association raised concerns that the FDA may have been too quick to approve Pradaxa. Among other things, the article asserted that the agency had overlooked risks associated with the medication, including a lack of reversal agent for Pradaxa bleeding.
Pradaxa was supposed to be a replacement for and improvement over warfarin. Also sold as Coumadin, warfarin has been in use for decades, and like Pradaxa, it may cause internal bleeding. However, warfarin bleeding can be stopped with vitamin K. No similar antidote yet exists for Pradaxa bleeding.
According to data from the FDA’s Adverse Event Database, Pradaxa was named in 12,494 injury reports between 2011 and 2012. These reports included 1,158 deaths. No other prescription drug on the market was associated with as many adverse events during that time period.
Pradaxa MDL Litigation
By February 2014, more than 2,300 Pradaxa lawsuits had been filed in the federal multidistrict litigation underway in the Southern District of Illinois. All of the lawsuits claim Pradaxa caused patients to suffer dangerous instances of internal bleeding, including cerebral hemorrhage and gastrointestinal bleeding. Documents unsealed in the course of the litigation indicate that the manufacturer of Pradaxa may have withheld data from the FDA which indicated the drug posed a greater bleeding risk to some patients than previously thought.
The first federal trial of a Pradaxa lawsuit is scheduled to begin in September 2014, with others to follow in December 2014, February 2015, and March 2015. These trials will be used to gauge how other juries might rule in similar Pradaxa lawsuits.
