Dozens of AndroGel lawsuits have been filed in courts around the U.S. on behalf of men who allegedly suffered heart attacks, strokes and other serious cardiovascular problems due to their use of the low testosterone therapy. These lawsuits allege that the manufacturer of AndroGel aggressively marketed the drug as a safe and effective treatment for low testosterone, even though AndroGel may increase the risk that certain men will experience heart attacks, strokes, dangerous blood clots and other life-threatening heart events. Because this low testosterone therapy was used by millions of men, attorneys representing plaintiffs in AndroGel lawsuits believe that thousands of such claims will ultimately be filed on behalf of its alleged victims.

androgel linked to heart attacks
AndroGel is a topical preparation that is approved to treat hypogonadism (low testosterone) in men who suffer from the condition due to an underlying medical issue. Despite what some men have allegedly inferred from AndroGel commercials they’ve seen on TV, the drug is not intended to be used as a remedy for age-related hypogonadism and its related symptoms, such as low libido and fatigue. By some estimates, the use of testosterone-boosting drugs like AndroGel has grown three-fold since 2001. A growing number of AndroGel testosterone lawsuits claim that AbbVie’s aggressive and misleading marketing caused millions of men to seek out testosterone treatment, even though they had no need for it.
In January 2014, the FDA announced a safety review of low testosterone therapies after two studies suggested they might be associated with an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and death. The first, which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), involved older men in the U.S. Veteran Affairs health system who had low testosterone and were undergoing imaging of the blood vessels of the heart, called coronary angiography, The observational study suggested a 30 percent increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and death in the group that had been prescribed Low testosterone therapy.
The second study cited by the FDA, which was reported in PLOS One in January 2014, reported an increased risk of heart attack among older men, as well as in younger men with pre-existing heart disease, who filled a prescription for testosterone therapy. Men 65 years and older appeared to face double the risk of heart attack in the first 90 days following the first prescription. Younger men with a pre-existing history of heart disease faced a two- to three-fold increased risk of heart attack in the first 90 days following a first prescription.
By April 2014, more than 30 AndroGel lawsuits had been filed in U.S. courts on behalf of men who were allegedly injured by the drug. According to these lawsuits, the use of AndroGel can increase the risk that men will experience:
- Heart Attacks
- Heart Failure
- Deep Vein Thrombosis
- Pulmonary Embolism
- Sudden Cardiac Death
Because of the possibility that AndroGel prescription testosterone lawsuit filings could number in the thousands, plaintiffs in these claims have asked the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) to consolidate all federally-filed cases in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois for coordinated proceedings. The Panel will hear oral arguments on the proposal in late May 2014.
